Dubai

I recently went to Lebanon and on my  way back had a 24-hour speed-date with Dubai.

This was not my first time in Dubai.  I had traveled to the Emirates a few years ago to visit my uncle in Abu Dhabi.  A lot has changed since then, and this time I went in November as opposed to mid-July (never again).

Dubai is a lot like Vegas, only with an Arab-twist.  There is this concentrated area of advanced technology, skyscrapers, and fancy cars.  But outside of this oasis there is nothing; only desert.

And for this reason I love Dubai.  it’s weird for sure, east meets west.  The majority of the people there are not citizens…tourists or immigrant workers.  But go to the mall (literally you could spend days in there), and you will see the Middle-Eastern women walking passed you with full black abaya, only their eyes showing, yet holding a Gucci bag. On the train, these ‘bedouin’ women are pulling iphone 5’s out of their dresses and if I had to guess, they are dripping in gold and silk underneath.  It’s pretty amazing.
